We’re not watching politics. We’re watching a power grab.
In the span of a week, Donald Trump and the Republican Party have launched a multi-state campaign to rig congressional maps, erase voters from the census, and weaponize law enforcement against elected officials — all in service of one goal: permanent GOP control of the House.
This isn’t theory. It’s not a warning about what might happen. It’s happening right now — in Texas, in DC, in Indiana, and in every room where power can be manipulated and lines can be redrawn.
Cementing minority rule doesn’t always look like tanks and mobs. Sometimes it looks just like this: illegal censuses, rigged maps,, and corrupted institutions.
Why Blue States Matter
Indivisible notes that 15 states with Democratic governors and legislatures (including Colorado) have a critical role to play in stopping this coup. Trump’s plan only works if blue states stay on the sidelines. While California and Illinois can flip multiple seats by redrawing their maps, Colorado, Washington, Oregon and Maryland are classified as “medium‑impact” states. The potential seat gains in these states are smaller, but their action sends a powerful signal: we will not unilaterally disarm.
Indivisible is asking governors and legislatures in these states to make four concrete commitments:
- Public commitments: Governors and state legislators must state publicly that they will redraw their maps if MAGA‑led states gerrymander first. This changes the risk calculus for GOP states.
- Review and reform redistricting laws: Colorado currently uses an independent redistricting commission. Lawmakers should examine whether changes are needed to respond quickly if Republicans launch mid‑cycle gerrymanders.
- Cross‑chamber coordination: The governor, state senate and state house should work together now to ensure legislation, legal groundwork and political will are ready.
- Special sessions: If red states redraw first, blue states must be able to convene special sessions immediately.
Action Items for L4D Members:
Colorado is considered a medium‑impact state for responsive redistricting. Our message to state leaders should be clear: we expect you to be ready to respond if Republicans rig their maps.
Here’s how you can help:
Call Governor Polis and your legislators. Ask them to publicly commit to responsive redistricting. Let them know you want Colorado to review its redistricting laws, coordinate across chambers and be ready to act quickly if red states gerrymander first. Indivisible has prepared call scripts and email templates for Colorado and other medium‑impact states; use them when you contact the governor’s office.

Amplify the message. Use social media, letters to the editor and conversations with friends to explain why Colorado must be ready. Trump’s strategy depends on blue states “playing fair while Republicans burn the rulebook”. Public pressure will strengthen our leaders’ resolve.
